Dallas Cowboys Proprietor Jerry Jones Fined $250,000 for ‘Inadvertent’ Obscene Gesture toward Spectators

The National Football League has imposed a substantial $250,000 penalty on Dallas Cowboys proprietor Jones for what he claims was an “inadvertent” obscene gesture directed at attendees during a Sunday’s contest at MetLife Stadium.

Widely circulated footage seemed to capture Jones flashing his middle finger toward opposing supporters, though he maintains he was actually signaling approval to Dallas supporters in attendance as his team secured a decisive win.

“That was regrettable. It was essentially an exchange with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones stated during a radio appearance. “There was a large group of Dallas supporters—not New York fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was brimming with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”

He further emphasized that the signal was entirely accidental, happening amid the excitement following the team’s final touchdown. “I simply put up the incorrect digit,” he noted. “It was inadvertently done. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it unplanned, you can. But it got corrected rapidly.”

League Context for Owner Fines

This incident isn’t the first time an league proprietor has been penalized for misconduct. Previous examples include:

  • Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink at spectators in January 2024.
  • Then Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a similar offensive signal.

Jones, a figure who is recognized for his publicity flair, possesses an approximate wealth of around $16bn, so the fine manageable for the billionaire owner.

Offseason Issues and Public Spotlight

This event comes after a controversial offseason for Jones, who encountered widespread criticism from the Dallas supporters after the team dealt star defensive player Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.

Moreover, Jones was a central subject in a streaming series that examined his role in building the Cowboys into the world’s highest-worth athletic organization, even with its recent championship drought.

The NFL’s action to penalize Jones underscores its continuing effort to maintain proper behavior among all team officials, irrespective of their status or financial standing.
