An individual who spiked candy with sleeping medication and distributed them to children at a youth camp in the area has admitted sexual crimes against two young males aged between nine and ten.

Jon Ruben was taken into custody after eight children and one adult experienced illness at the location in mid-summer.

The 76-year-old, from Ruddington in Nottinghamshire, pleaded guilty to a multiple criminal counts when he appeared at the judicial center on recently.

However, he denied one of the sexual offences he was charged with, which was concerning a nine-year-old boy.

The accused was kept in jail ahead of a further hearing on late November.

'Candy game'

The legal representative, handling the case, detailed the criminal behavior to the court.

She stated his victims were under-privileged children who were participating in a summer program which he operated.

Ruben conducted a "treat game" with the children, Mrs Prior explained, in which he would access the sleeping quarters when they were preparing to sleep and ask them to consume candy "as quickly as they can".

She informed the proceedings Ruben had played this game with the boys "repeatedly", and minors had earlier experienced illness the following morning.

She stated Ruben had been able to explain this repeatedly as the minors being "overwrought by enjoyment", until his stepchild had worries in summer 2025.

The legal representative added: "Recently" his stepchild had suspicions about the situation, justifiably.

"They chose" to examine in the man's possessions."

The legal counsel explained objects including baby oil, Vaseline and syringes were located, and his family member alerted the law enforcement about his suspicions.

She stated the defendant went on to conduct the "sweet game" with six children that night - that Saturday - and they were all sick the subsequent day.

"Authorities" had not responded by that time," she stated further.

The regulatory agency, the investigative body, earlier informed that it was reviewing the police response of the incident.

The prosecutor explained the children were struggling to walk due to their sickness, so Ruben's stepson contacted the law enforcement once more.

She stated the man then engaged in the "sweet game" in a room of five minors.
